Tiny and Turbo
The story of Tiny and Turbo
During the Summer Term 2025, a random tortoise was found outside the school by a child and their mother. They brought the tortoise up to the school and the staff instantly fell in love! They asked Miss McGann if they could keep it as a pet, and she agreed if the tortoise wasn't claimed. Unfortunately for school (but happily for the tortoise's family) he was claimed and the staff felt sad.
During the summer holidays, Miss McGann received a message asking if she wanted two baby tortoises and she said yes! They arrived at school in October and have been thriving ever since; growing in size, eating lots and getting more and more curious.
Every morning, they have a tepid bath and have their food put out. Their vivarium is spritzed with water to keep it humid and the temperature is checked. Staff are responsible for keeping their enclosure clean.
They have been a great hit with staff, children governors and parents. People often ask to come in to see them and comment on how big they have become.
They are still babies and will not reach maturity and their full size until they are about 4 or 5 years old. At that point they will begin to hibernate.
At the moment, we are enjoying looking after them and observing them. They move faster than you would expect!
