Art & Design and Design & Technology

Art & Design

Intent:

Through our curriculum at Connaught, children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively whether they are drawing, painting, sketching or creating sculpture; through the use of colour, line, shape, form and texture enabling them to 'Improve Every Day'. At Connaught we want every child to flourish in art.  There is no such thing as the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ outcome.  We want our children to be able to express their creativity through the use of their imagination which will enable them to produce high quality pieces of art, inspired by their environment, cultures, artists, peers and self-belief.  Our children will learn to take risks and not to be afraid of making a mistake of what they produce.  Instead they will have the opportunity to reflect on their own creations and evaluate their work, thinking about what they would change next time.  We also want our children to understand that through perseverance and attentiveness will lead them to personal pride and gratification.

Implementation:

At Connaught we aim that every child will:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Each child will have their own sketch book, to keep a record of any pieces of work which they produce in art.   New techniques and skills are modelled and examples of work are shown to the children.   All children’s work will be celebrated within their class and positive feedback will be given to encourage small changes to be made in future work.

 Impact:

Our children will be given the opportunity to explore and self-express their ideas through their art work.  They are always keen to learn new skills and work hard to perfect those shown to them. The children’s art is very often cross-curricular, and we often link them to topics taught in history, geography, science and many others.  They will experience a broad and varied art curriculum with a wide range of opportunities to express themselves creatively, helping them to develop an enthusiasm for their own personal creativity.

This road map of the Art work taught shows our broad and engaging Art curriculum and the variety of skills taught over the years. Children have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of art skills such as weaving, printing, sewing, sketching, painting, collage and sculpture to name a few!

National Curriculum

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:

  • to create sketchbooks to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials (for example pencil, charcoal, paint, clay)
  • about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Kapow

At Connaught Junior School we use Kapow which is a scheme of work for Art & Design and Design & Technology.

Each year group features a topic focussing on the explicit development of art, craft and design skills, and on the former elements of art: colour, form, line, shape, texture, tone and pattern.

Quotes

This is one of my favourite subjects. I like being creative and thinking of different ways that I can design something. I find that art is really relaxing and when I've had a busy morning working on maths (for example) I find it helps to clear my mind.

Design & Technology

Intent

At Connaught, we strive for every child to use unleash their creativity and imagination in Design Technology.  DT allows the children to design, make, solve real and relevant problems.  If possible, projects are linked to topics which are covered in each year group.  Skills are taught to allow Connaught children build upon previous knowledge and become more confident in their own work. We believe that a love of cooking is important to allow pupils to become confident with preparing and creating a wide range of dishes.  The importance of understanding what a balanced diet is and food hygiene is an essential learning tool.  We are extremely lucky to have a pottery room at Connaught where the children can make and create a piece of pottery, linked to their topic, building on their skills as they progress through the years.

Implementation

In design lessons, pupils are taught how to design, using research and sketches as aides, make using tools and materials, to evaluate their product and build their technical knowledge. Furthermore, as part of their cookery skills, pupils explore how to cook through and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Pupils spend time on this explicitly in year 3 and 4 where they can utilise the cooking facilities we have. The topic of healthy living is also discussed in science.  Pupils will engage in a range of pottery activities, enabling them to experiment and create individual pieces of work linked to their topic subject allowing all pupils opportunities regardless of their background or skill level.

Impact

The impact of these lessons will ensure children are given the opportunity to explore and self-express their ideas through their art and design work.  Through their projects they always learn new skills and work hard to perfect those shown to them.  Children experience a broad and varied curriculum with a wide range of opportunities to express themselves, which develops an enthusiasm for their own personal creativity.
