PE

'A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.'

DfE New Curriculum document 2013

At Connaught Junior School, Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum and we strive to create a culture that aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE and encourage each other and achieve. We aspire for children to become “physically literate” and have the confidence to challenge themselves in all areas of the PE curriculum. With a deeper understanding of the skills, children will be able to apply these to any physical activity they participate in.

Implementation

The children at Connaught Junior School will be exposed to range of sports from both our class teachers and sports specialists. The lessons are progressive and builds on prior knowledge with the intent to create a lifelong love of sport. Adults in the school will deliver a high level of modelling which the children will practise and develop throughout the each lesson. Through our planning, videos, visual aids and guides no child is left behind. The school’s PE curriculum is delivered in way whereby those from SEND or socially disadvantaged children can achieve and are encouraged to represent their school at various sporting events. Children will be given the opportunity to choose what sport they participate in which gives them ownership over their learning. Through this ownership, it gives children the chance to empower themselves and take control. We believe that the curriculum we offer our pupils is carefully tailored to give every pupil the opportunity to improve every day.

Below are some examples of the learning journey that children go on from Year 3 to Year 6, in different programmes of study. eg Athletics and Ball Skills.

Below is an overview of what will be covered in each year group this year.

Impact

It is clear what end points the curriculum is building towards and what pupils need to know and be able to do to reach those end points. The school’s PE curriculum is planned and sequenced to enable pupils to build on what has been taught before and towards its clearly defined end points. Throughout each unit, the children will be able to practise skills taught in the previous lessons through the “sticky skills” programme. This will help to address any misconceptions before moving onto to focussing on a new skill or unit.

We believe our PE curriculum provides students with challenge, empowerment and a better understanding of how we can lead active and healthy lifestyles.

Scheme of Work

At Connaught Junior School, we follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work which offers all children the opportunities to develop their physical fundamental movement skills, as well as achieving whole child objectives through gaining a knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics and building an understanding of the social and emotional side of sport.

Each lesson has progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage our pupils; they have clear learning objectives with key success criteria, which provides information to help pupils develop their skill level and to consider how successful they have been within a lesson. Teaching points appear throughout to help teachers with their subject knowledge and modelling and to ensure misconceptions are addressed at the earliest point. Differentiation tasks provide activities with simple changes to appropriately challenge/support to ensure all pupils are successful and feel included. At Connaught Junior School, we use the S.T.E.P differentiation model. This stands for Space, Time, Equipment and People. All of these can be adjusted within the lesson to ensure everyone hits the learning objectives and is successful while challenging those who are feeling confident.

We recognise that learning takes time; all lessons are sequential and build on prior knowledge and skills. With this in mind, we have a Sticky Skills Programme which is run by our sports councillors. At the beginning of every lesson, we spend 5 minutes recapping and retrieving skills learnt from our previous lesson. Once this is complete, we focus our attention on the social and emotional side of P.E before moving onto the learning objectives. Our pupils benefit from high quality instruction, time to practise and receiving meaningful feedback.

Resources

The facilities for the teaching of physical education at Connaught Junior School are, we believe, unique. As a junior school we have access to a daily mile track, sports hall, a heated indoor swimming pool (offsite), floodlit hard sports courts, and a grassed playing field.

As well as superb facilities in which to teach, the school also has a well resourced PE store, portable football and netball goals, portable and fixed gymnastics equipment as well as mats and benches.

Sports Captains

Children in Year 6 have the opportunity to put themselves forward as Sports captains and are democratically voted in by the members of their house in Year 3 to 6 early in the Autumn Term. The children typically speak about their commitment to sport, in and out of school, and what they would bring to the role. Our sports captains assist our specialist sports teacher and staff with organising events, among them the Indoor Tournament and Sports Day

Year 6 Sports Captain Quotes

“I love being a sports captain at Connaught. It gives me extra responsibility throughout the year!”

“I have always wanted to be a sports captain since I started in Year 3. I love leading my house at Sports Day!”

“Sports Captains have the best job at school! We get to plan the Indoor Tournament and help out when schools come to visit us.”

Sports Council

At Connaught, our Sports Councillors play an active role in promoting the enjoyment and physical theory behind our quality first teaching of PE. The children work closely with their peers, across all year groups, to discuss and share their ideas of how they can increase involvement across the whole school. The Sports Council play a pivotal role in running and promoting our extensive sporting extra-curricular opportunities throughout the school day. They show real enthusiasm and passion towards their love of PE and Sport, and we are lucky as a school that they are keen to improve and promote PE further, throughout their time at Connaught.

Action Plan

Sports Day

Sports Day at Connaught is a highlight in the school year. We value a sense of fairness, enjoyment and participation with a healthy dose of competition. The children gather in their houses wearing their house colours, and then parade onto the school field to great cheers from the waiting crowd of invited parents and friends. The morning comprises of the children participating in activities that earn their house points. Over lunchtime parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles enjoy a picnic lunch in our spacious grounds. In the afternoon we have competitive races, sprint, relays and long distance. Even parents and staff have a chance to compete!

Indoor Tournament

Connaught Junior has a long history and this is best shown in the wonderful tradition of the Indoor Tournament, which has been running annually since the early 1970s. Children organise themselves into football or hockey teams of 5 aside and submit their teams, with a quirky name, to Mr Hatton. Lunchtime heats then take place over a period of approximately 4 weeks and the winning teams make it to the finals. Parents are invited to watch the evening finals in the school hall where excitement reaches fever pitch to see which teams will win for football and hockey. Teams consisting of children from the lower school often play children from the upper school, with some surprising results and the sense of sportsmanship is very pleasing to see. This fantastic tradition really gives the children a sense of achievement and participation in this optional and popular event

Sports Teams

At Connaught we encourage our children to participate in sport through our curriculum and sports clubs, but also through our avid participation in inter school competitions. We have a strong and successful football and netball team that regularly take part in local and county events. We also take teams to sporting events for cross-country, cricket, tennis, golf, hockey and rugby.

Sports Clubs

We run a number of sporting clubs at Connaught, some teacher run and some run by external providers. Please see our clubs list for details.
